We are excited about all of the good work that Delhaize and Hannaford continue to do on the sustainability front.  Green Retail Decisions covered Delhaize’s recent sustainability report on the company’s progress on a wide range of issues from sustainable seafood to zero waste.  Hannaford’s work with the Grocery Stewardship Certification program was highlighted both in the article and the report.

Manomet’s Grocery Stewardship Certification ‘recognized Delhaize America’s Hannaford chain for sustainability efforts that diverted 125 million pounds of waste from landfills in 2014, prevented more than 430 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions, and saved the company $15 million.’

The report also talks about Delhaize’s overall performance on issues like:

  • Sustainable Private Brands
  • Zero Waste
  • Healthy Lifestyles
  • Associate Diversity and Development

Delhaize’s focus for 2020 is to improve the sustainability and health of their private brand products at all points along the value chain.

“Hannaford customers care about the environment and expect us to be good stewards on their behalf,” said George Parmenter, the grocer’s manager of sustainability. “Certification of our stores demonstrates that our associates work every day on sustainability that is both good for the environment and good for business.”
