Since the Grocery Stewardship Certification (GSC) program launched three years ago, we’ve worked with nearly 500 grocers. As the first and only national sustainability certification for grocers, we have worked hard to create a system that helps grocers improve their operational sustainability. We’re happy to announce that we’ve taken the next step in the evolution of the program and are now able to offer our Sustainability Workbook online.
“Moving from a paper workbook to an online workbook is a big step forward for the Grocery Stewardship Certification program,” said Peter Cook, program manager. “Not only is it more sustainable, but it will be much more convenient and easy to use for the grocers we work with. As more and more grocers continue enroll in the GSC, this will allow us to maintain the high-quality of data and service that the GSC is known for.”
Manomet’s GSC program helps grocers enhance the operational sustainability at the store level with a proven methodology that provides for consistency and accountability, while engaging employees. The GSC Sustainability Workbook trains store managers or otherwise designated staff to assess, document, and implement source reduction opportunities, such as energy efficiency practices, energy efficiency during power outages (resiliency), general sector water conservation practices, toxics reduction, and food waste diversion. The GSC workbook also trains staff to recognize the adequacy of their store’s climate resilience preparedness (flooding and energy). Finally, the GSC program outlines the effects that toxic chemicals have with regard to grocery store functions.
The information that is collected from the GSC workbook is then reviewed and compiled by GSC staff to create a comprehensive sustainability report that corporate retail and store staff can use to learn which operational procedures are already saving money; how much they’re saving in cost and resource and what can be done in the future to maximize those savings.
The new online workbook was designed for Manomet by DROSTE Consultants, Inc., a leader in the retail software industry since 1983, providing targeted and tailored solutions for independent grocers.
