Partnership will develop online courses to help grocers be more energy and resource efficient

Manomet’s Grocery Stewardship Program (GSC) and Retail Learning Institute (RLI) today announce a new partnership to deliver sustainability-focused online courses to the grocery industry. The free online courses will be focused on delivering low or no-cost operational actions that grocery store employees can take to become more energy and resource efficient. The first online course to be launched is Top 5 Energy Savers and it highlights five easy operational practices that can save a grocery store up to $15,000 per year.

RLI provides a complete online learning system with content tailored to the food retail industry and full tracking capabilities. The GSC program helps food retailers assess and better understand the cost and environmental impacts of current practices, identify opportunities to make improvements, reduce operating costs, and increase employee engagement through an overall strategy that provides operational sustainability.

“We are excited to be partnering with Retail Learning Institute,” said Peter Cooke, program manager of the GSC. “RLI is an important educational resource for the food retail industry. Becoming more resource and energy efficient is critical for grocery stores and we are honored to be able to share our expertise in this area.”

RLI’s mission is to advance leadership and vocational learning to support the growth of people, workplaces and communities. “The Grocery Stewardship Certification program brings a unique understanding of the challenges facing the industry and easy to implement ways to increase efficiency. We think that our members and other retailers will find these courses extremely useful,” said Ana Velázquez, Learning Solutions Director for RLI.

The GSC and RLI will be launching two additional online trainings this fall. They include Top 10 Ways to Help Your Grocery Store Reduce Waste and a training on reducing toxic chemicals and hazardous waste at grocery stores.

Since launching in 2012, the GSC has enrolled more than 800 grocery stores in the United States and Canada. The GSC works with grocers to engage employees on operational sustainability strategies and to review store-level practices and equipment with an eye to increasing energy efficiency, boosting revenue and lowering costs.
